Lacie is the protagonist and the player character of the game Paper Lily. She is a depressed and insecure girl who doesn't talk much and avoids getting involved with others. After a series of bad luck, she performs a ritual with a golden letter to transport herself to another world in search of a cure for her unknown condition.

Personality

Lacie is a depressed, pessimistic, and withdrawn girl as a result of the bullying she endured at school. She constantly experiences misfortunes and receives hurtful remarks from others, except for her supportive brother Hiro.

Because of this, she struggles with a lack of self-worth, often appearing emotionless with a blank expression and speaking with little enthusiasm. Her isolation is evident as she rarely leaves her home and avoids interactions with others. However, her visit to the cafeteria at the start of the game is her first outing in a long while. Despite her accomplishments, she tends to downplay them and internalize blame for her situation when things go wrong. In an attempt to address the root cause of her issues, she performs a ritual to seek answers and improve her social skills. At the same time, sees these rituals as an opportunity to break out of her comfort zone, believing that life would be simpler without the presence of others if she fails to find the answers she seeks.

Upon meeting the friendly Rune, Lacie learns that her struggles stem from a curse, and that she needs to reach a lighthouse and get help from Red in order to lift the curse. This revelation inspires her to grow and mature, forming connections with those she meets along the way. Their willingness to share new information and adapt to unfamiliar situations proves invaluable in helping Lacie overcome challenges. While she is skilled in analyzing situations and problem-solving, she still sometimes struggles with fully embracing her own charisma and confidence.

When she met Sai, Lacie initially did not trust him because his behavior towards her seemed different from everyone else's. She was unsure of his intentions and whether he even cared about her curse. She ignored him when he asked personal questions, but as he helped her through some obstacles, she began to trust him more. Eventually, she felt comfortable enough to share her name and open up about her past with Sai. She revealed that she used to be sociable and outgoing before a curse afflicted her, causing everyone, including animals, to treat her poorly. This pushed her to isolate herself from the world.

When Lacie found a door and saw a vase of white lily in a garden, she started to consider Sai's advice on focusing on self-growth rather than rushing to complete everything on her bucket list before dying. This helped her realize the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, and she thanked Sai for his support whenever she needed it.

Appearance

Lacie is a young girl who is short in stature. She has light skin, blue eyes, and long blonde hair that reaches her waist. She wears a red scarf, a black headband bow, and a white jacket with yellowish sleeves and pockets. Underneath the jacket, she wears a black school uniform with a red tie. Trivia

• Lacie also makes an appearance in Tamaghost Jump, another game made by Leef 6010.

• Lacie's design has been slightly altered from the original version. Previously, she had a black and white forehead bow with a blue rhinestone-like crystal. Her jacket was pinkish with dark pink sleeves and pockets, a red bow on her school uniform, and her boots were pink and brown with a pink bow.

• The developers have mentioned that Lacie was inspired by the character Alice from Alice in Wonderland.

• Next to the bed is a red thread from the mother's sewing kit that matches Lacie's scarf. This suggests that the scarf might have been made by Lacie's mother for her when she was younger, indicating a positive relationship between them in the past. However, it appears that their relationship has deteriorated over time, with the mother becoming neglectful and creating a rift between them.

• In the forest, Lacie expresses her dislike for puzzles involving lamps as she attempts to turn them off to open a gate. Later, in the facility, when Sai asks if she and the crow are friends, Lacie cryptically responds that they are "save points," leaving Sai puzzled. These occurrences indicate that Lacie breaks the fourth wall in the game, displaying a level of self-awareness.

• Lacie has surprisingly good stamina, as she has been able to outrun a monstrous, one-eyed, painting lady.

• Lacie may seem pessimistic and have low self-esteem, but there is a moment in the game demo where she displays her caring and compassionate side. For instance, when Lacie encounters Miss Knives in napkin form in a locked cell room, she sympathizes with her and understands her tragic past. Despite not knowing who Lilith is, Lacie hopes she does not suffer because of her. This suggests that Lacie sees herself in Miss Knives, as they both have had difficult and traumatic childhoods marked by curses and being labeled as witches. Unfortunately, in version 1.1 of the game, they removed the dialogue about her empathy, which is unfortunate as it diminishes Lacie's connection to Miss Knives' vulnerability, even if it is just a small moment.
